If you have not begun your search yet, you can take comfort in the fact that there are plenty of long evening dresses with sleeves available for you to choose from. I, too, scratch my head, and study books and search online, sometimes to no avail. Those of you who click on the caption to view the dresses at Google Books will notice that the image is black & white. Clicking on captions will take you to the magazine page at Google Books. The magazine shows a couple of these, so it doesn’t seem to be a mistake-but I find it odd to imagine a lady dancing, wearing this. Above left are three examples from the 1835 Magazine of the Beau Monde, which apparently stole from other magazines. The artistry of the embroidered designs, the choice of colors and textures, the consummate skill of the needlework, are all undeniable. You get to catch up with all the girls and see them try different styles and colors for the various weddings they are a part of. There’s no doubt that the dress has suffered over the centuries, with scattered stains and wear to mark its long life, and it’s now so fragile that it can only be on public display once a year (or until funds are raised for a state-of-the-preservation-art display case.) But thanks to historian Kimberly Alexander and Patricia Gilrein, Collections Manager and Exhibitions Coordinator of The Bostonian Society, the dress was brought out from its large, white conservation box and swaths of acid-free tissue for me to see.
Little is known about Mrs. Lewis herself today, not even the year of her birth. Some of the earlier paintings are labeled “The sixth birthday dress of the Year” in her neat penmanship, marked with the date. The paintings catalogue a wide variety of fashions and hairstyles as the wide hoops and towering “heads” of the 1770s gradually give way to the softer dresses with higher waists of the early 1800s.
