For people in the throes of alcohol and substance abuse, one of the biggest barriers to treatment is denial that there is a problem. Denial can persist for years and keep the addict from accepting that there is a problem even in the face of substantial evidence otherwise. But once the addict moves beyond denial and accepts that he or she is indeed addicted, the turnaround can be almost instant. If you are struggling to get a loved one into treatment, here are some common denial excuses, along with how you can counter them.
Most teenagers say they started taking drugs out of curiosity, or to impress their friends. It is something new for them, something parents forbid. And we all know that what is forbidden is even more tempting. They like to experiment all new things. Most the times they go with the flow and experiment what other teenagers their age experiment. Unfortunately things move quickly and what was supposed to be just an experiment ends up in being something extremely harmful and long lasting. Even if in the beginning they think they can stop, they soon realize that this has already turned into an addiction.
Conversely, his alcoholic wife complains to him that he is acting self- righteous about quitting drinking alcohol even though he has been clean and sober for such a short time. M.F. confides in me he is thinking about divorce unless his wife chooses to quit drinking alcohol addiction signs.
Is this normal behavior or do these teens have a problem with alcohol or drugs? It is common to make excuses for family members when the thought of substance abuse is brought to our attention. It is much easier to be in denial, to look away from the problem.
Unfortunately, my only complaint is the lack of an abstinence message in their campaign. They are not making it loud signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse clear, to young people, that they have the choice not to drink alcohol at all, whatever their age. They are not being taught, “Abstinence is the better choice!” They are only teaching young people not to drink alcohol until they are twenty-one years old. They must believe something magical happens when they attain the age of twenty-one. If they only choose to drink then, there will be no consequences.

Sadly enough this is something that many struggle with. I’ve been there myself. Whether you’re into bodybuilding or just love the feeling and effects of intense workouts, we can all agree that this is an extreme sport in its own way. With that being realized it’s easy to see that some of us get caught up into other extremes in life. Many of us that workout intense are addicted to working out to some degree, though a healthy addiction. But none the less that personality trait on addiction is there and is often prevalent in our lives.
